My journey with ACMNP began in 1958 while I was a seminary student at Vanderbilt. One day, Warren Ost stopped by and asked if I would consider working in the national parks. Before long, my wife and I were driving from Nashville, Tennessee to Glacier National Park in our ’53 Ford. It took us five days to get there, heading all the way to Swiftcurrent Campground in what felt like the edge of the world.
When we arrived, I was told I would be a “bus boy.” I remember looking around and asking, “Where are the buses?” They kindly pointed me toward the kitchen. My wife worked as a waitress, and I bussed tables—but ministry was already beginning in the midst of ordinary work. That summer, I hiked 130 miles, developed friendships, and helped lead services. It was only my second year of seminary. I had never preached a sermon before arriving in Glacier, and suddenly I was asked to do just that. My first sermon was preached at Swiftcurrent Campground during what became our regular Sunday worship gathering. I also spent time campground calling—visiting with people, asking about their lives and faith backgrounds, and listening to their questions.
Each week, we gathered with the college students working in the park. They brought their life questions, their doubts, and their stories. Hiking alongside them and talking about how God was at work created powerful opportunities for connection. It was my first real immersion into hands-on ministry, and it shaped me deeply.
In the 1980’s, Warren invited me to join the ACMNP Board. I have served ever since, including as chair, and have attended nearly every park meeting over the years. This ministry has been woven into the fabric of my life and relationships.
If I could offer advice to someone beginning a season with ACMNP, it would be this: take in God’s world. Spend time in the beauty of creation. Let it shape you. The parks have a powerful influence on people’s lives, including your own. And as you build community there, you will see firsthand the impact you can have on others.

The Lord said, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
